Seeking an instructor based in Asia to teach Writing Workshop Distance Learning

The World Bank Group Writing and Speaking Skills Program (WSSP) is seeking a freelance instructor currently living in Asia for a course called Writing Workshop Distance Learning.

The course will be taught from a World Bank country office in Asia, using web conferencing technology. Possible locations would be Bangkok (preferred), Beijing, or Jakarta. The instructor must already be living in one of these cities to be considered for the position.

The course is designed to help participants identify and correct errors in English grammar and vocabulary; construct effective sentences (punctuation, emphasis, connection, subordination, and word order); and write unified paragraphs. To meet these objectives, participants work with their own and each others actual writing, as well as with WSSP materials. The course demands great flexibility, and every delivery is different; yet the objectives must still be met in each delivery. WSSP will train the instructor through a process of initial observation, co-training, and follow-up support“”to be conducted virtually in consultation with the WSSP team in Washington.

Qualifications and Requirements:
Mandatory Experience

  • Significant experience in training adult learners including economists, sociologists, engineers, and/or other experts with advanced degrees in highly technical fields to help them improve their on-the-job writing in English (at least two years)
  • Significant experience teaching ESL and technical writing courses at international organizations, corporations, and/or government agencies (at least two years)
    Mandatory Qualifications
  • Native English speaker – US English preferred
  • Master’s degree or higher in English, ESL, communications, writing, or closely related field; OR
  • Master’s degree or higher in another field, with significant on-the-job experience in the fields mentioned under “Mandatory Experience
    Desirable Qualifications/Experience
  • Experience teaching writing or ESL courses virtually (e.g., via web conferencing technology)
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn new teaching content, methodology, and technology
  • Ability to integrate feedback from colleagues to improve performance quickly
  • Excellent communication skills, both inside and outside of the classroom setting
  • High standards of professionalism
  • Outstanding teamwork and collaboration skills
