Basic Course Structure:
- Have students read aloud a newspaper article of your choice allowing you to incorporate some listening comprehension & pronunciation correction into the lesson.
Take notes of mispronounced words, wrong intonation or stress so that you can correct such errors afterwards.
Correct the errors and have them repeat after you until they get them right.
- Have students summarize the contents of the article just read.
- Now that you have discussed the text, ask them some general comprehension questions about the text.
Make sure they get a correct understanding of the given text by asking questions and give them as much chance as possible to practice their English skills.
- Have students rephrase a paragraph in their own words.
Correct any errors, awkward expressions, contradictions and logical incoherencies students make in the process.
- Divide them into pairs (3-4), preferably into the pros and cons sides, and have them exchange opinions using as much as possible the key words, expressions and collocation covered in class. Walk around and weigh in on debate and throw some thought-provoking questions so that they can learn how to express their opinions with improved fluency and spontaneity.
